I think it’s a chicken or egg thing. Are we becoming more violent as a society and thus need to be locked up more or is it because we are being locked up more that we are becoming more violent?
I don’t think “soft on crime” and “tough on crime” work. What works is being “smart on crime”. Recognizing those that can be rehabilitated and providing the tools to do so. Recognizing the ones that can’t and finding appropriate punishment (and trying anyway).
