In order to support legislation requiring mandatory ignition locking devices in cars of people who had been arrested twice or more for drunk driving, MADD supporters demonstrated the dangers of casual drinking by having a few outside the state capitol.

MADD is pushing for the devices to be installed in the cars of anyone who has been arrested twice on charges of driving under the influence. Twenty-one other states already use the ignition-locking devices that prevents a car from starting if the driver’s breath registers at a .02 or higher.

At the hearing with lawmakers Monday, police poured three volunteers drinks at the Capitol to demonstrate how casual drinking can put someone over the legal limit.

MADD argued that the devices should be mandatory in Connecticut, and claimed that they would help to save lives.

Note that their proposal doesn’t require a conviction for drunk driving; merely an arrest.
